Hi guys - No, I am not trying to mislead anyone - I thought I was helping ! I apologize if that didn't happen.
This is actually the first time I've kept track. I drove 4,000 miles and put in a 2 1/2 gallon container - and there was actually a little DEF left in the container.
Now what MAY be off is my percentage of towing vs non-towing. I full time so I do some driving without the trailer. So if I make that 75% towing, is that better ? I'm not real sure. What I do know for sure is that I drove 4000 miles and added 2.5 gallons of DEF. I've been getting approx 11 - 12 mpg towing diesel mileage.
I always tow at 55-60 and I know a lot of you guys tow at higher speeds. Is that part of the discrepancy ?
In the 2013 Ford owners manual (diesel supplement), pages 28-29, it has a chart for their trucks, based on rear end gears, giving approximate projections for DEF usage. You can get at it on-line if interested.
Here's the numbers -
- Trailer towing/aggresive/city driving shows 2050 - 5050 miles per TANK (5 gallons).
- Normal driving indicates 5050 - 7300 miles.
- Steady highway driving is 7300 - 8900 miles per tank. (This number goes up to 10,000 miles (max) if you have 3.31 axle).
I consider myself to be a pretty easy-going driver FWIW. Don't do too many burnouts with my dually.
In any event, I think the article's mpg IS way off so I would not use that as a guide. I suspect they error on the side of caution so they don't have a bunch of folks wanting to sue because they got much lower mpg.
Again, I apologize if I have mislead anyone in any way. That was not my intent. I'll continue to keep track but I think it's gonna be a while before I refill.

On edit - I think I found my problem. It suddenly dawned on me that I use MS Streets and Trips and have been keeping a map log of all my travels, so I just went back and did the math from where I was when I refilled the DEF to where I am now - and that was right at 2000 miles. So my towing percentage is really at 50%. I hope this clarifies things a little.
