DEF is used to treat the exhaust to reduce the NOx emissions. DEF combines with the NOx in a chemical reaction to form nitrogen and water vapor. DEF equipped vehicles allow engineers to design and tune the engine with combustion efficiency a higher priority than vehicles using EGR as the main means of reducing NOx. Although both systems use EGR, the former system used a much higher level of EGR which had various negative effects on engine performance and reliability issues.
