Detachable Power Cord?

I have been looking at new Trailers and see most are coming with the power cord detached now instead of just pushing the cord into a trailer box?

My question is why? What is the benefit from have a detachable cord?

Seems to me one more thing I would have to store. Maybe I am missing something?

Every trailer we've owned - popups, a hybrid, travel trailers - has come with a non-detachable main service power cord. 15 yrs ago I installed a Marinco Park Power Conversion Kit on our popup and subsequently moved it to every trailer we've owned since including our current Coachmen Freedom Express. 30 amp cable is stiff enough as it is and difficult to push back in through a "mouse hole" without tangling, 50 amp is even worse, and as outside temps drop it can become impossible. I personally wouldn't own any trailer that did not have a detachable main service power cord.
  • My 14 ft had a detachable. My 18 ft has the retractable. Much prefer the detachable since one can't access the compartment in my Shasta.

It worked fine when we brought it home. Guess what didn't work on the first trip? Yup. Late arrival at the campground, of course, and only about ten feet came out when we pulled on the cord.

DH pried off the circular housing trim and was able to get his arm in enough to wiggle around the power cord so it eventually worked. Then we realized the power pole was too far away anyway, so had to move the trailer.

So, Santa will bring a 30 amp extension cord.
  • I have TC with a push in cord, and the dumb-dumb builders put a water line right below it. Talk about colddddd water.

  • First....with the removable one no place for mice or chipmonks to run in....and now dedicated space for cord storage. I keep my cord in the back of my truck to hook it up before anything else
  • i have also used both, and while it is nice that ants can not follow the cord up into my sewer compartment with the detachable one, I would rather not have it available to any theft.

In my Bounder, the compartment is pretty large, and the floor opens up to have access for the power cord, 4: hose, and garden hose, so there is never a problem winding the cord back up.

With my old class C, the cord was in a box, and only a 2" diameter opening to slide it out, and put it back. But 30 amp cords are pretty flexible.

50 amp cords are pretty stiff, thus the need to remove them, and wind them up. It would be nice if they also make a detachable 30 amp cord, so if you are at a smaller park service, or home, you do not need to drag out the 50 amp 25 pound cord! Yes I am sure that someone makes one, or I could make my own, just my buddy with the 50 amp RV did not have a 30 amp lightweight cord.

I guess I will put up with whatever comes with my next RV.

    Good luck,
    Fred.
  • Have had both and like the removal better, always had fun trying to push the cord back in the little hole. I pull this one off throw it in the storage bin and ready to go. And no little critters can crawl up the cord and into the trailer.
  • Maybe to make it easier to replace when some dirtbag steals your power cord. :(
