Detailing

BEORE a trip I detail out my TV and TT from bow to stern inside and out. They glisten! But obviously weather and road take their toll and it doesn't take more than a day or two before the shine is covered in road dust, splattered bugs, rain spots, mud, etc. Wifey suggests starting out with a general cleaning and detail off the road trip when we return. (Which I do anyway). I know there's no right or wrong answer but I'm just wondering if I'm typical or neurotic? LOL
  • I would like my husband to be as clean as you. I have a feeling I'm going to be stuck doing most of our TT cleaning (we just bought one) just like I do most of the cleaning at home. :(
  • Nothing wrong with keeping it clean if you enjoy having your vehicles/ RV
clean. While I am religious about cleaning the RV interior religiously. The Exterior gets fully waxed once a year and then washed on an as needed basis.
I do not have the time or desire to wash exterior for each trip.
I put my energy into maintenance and keeping rig ready to roll, washing seems to always fall off of my list of priorities.

hhhhmmmmm........ Maybe I am compulsive. I've had my daily driver for 28yrs and it gets washed every week and detailed 4 to 6 times a year. It has 500,000 miles and pretty much looks like the day it came out of the showroom. Second car is 11yrs old and gets the same treatment. It is showroom perfect at 100,000 miles. Tow van is 15yrs old at the 100,000 mark and again near showroom perfect. This TT is a 2015.... It is our third one. Kept the other two 20yrs each and sold them to good families. Bought each one new. I'm thinking I'll still have these in ten years and maybe buy a new TV when we retire.

Bring your vehicles up here to the "Rust Belt", you will be able to watch your vehicles simply disappear in a pile rust before your eyes!

Around here you listen to the rust falling off the vehicles as they drive by..

You are way over the top needlessly worrying about nothing and over doing "detailing" just wears off your paint prematurely.

I have a 40 yr old car sitting in my yard which the last time it was painted was back in the 1990s.. The paint I used was PPG's System 2000 "concepts" paints which is a 2 part Urethane paint.. The paint has never been waxed, buffed or detailed and still looks nearly as shiny as when I painted it.. Unfortunately the underside of the vehicle rotted out forcing me to permanently park it until I get to the point of transferring interior parts to my replacement "donor" car.. That car has 297,000 miles on it when I parked it.

I currently have a 2003 F250 with 197,000 miles, never been waxed, buffed or detailed.. Seen many harsh winter drives and the paint looks as good as the day I drove it off the dealer lot.. That truck for the last 3 yrs lives outside and no harm has come to it yet.

I have never waxed any of my vehicles since I fount Urethane paints.

Pretty much every vehicle since the late 1990s come factory with a clear coat and pretty much all newer vehicles use two part paints to boot. That clear coat is far tougher and much more UV stable than the old, old Enamel paints from 1920's up to 1980s.

The old enamel paints would get a chalky haze that dulled the finish and was a bear to remove. Wax was extremely important to that paint in preventing the paint from going bad.

Relax, chill out and don't work so hard.. Camping and living should not be that much hard work and dedication..
  • Unless your TT has full body paint, it doesn't need any wax/sealant. UV protection would be about it, and Aerospace 303 does the trick for me. I use it a few tiimes a season on everything outside the TT. That said, keeping the surface waxed will help keep it clean and make for easier washing. As you know, detailing an RV takes a lot of time. I highly recommend a synthetic polymer that will last at least a year over the more common carnuba based waxes.

  • I have never detailed anything. My vehicles get washed a few times a year and the trailers get washed once per year. So in my opinion, you are OCD in this regard.
  • The windows and mirrors on the truck get a good cleaning before every trip. The rest of it, not so often.

If I knew I was going into bug-country, I'd consider adding the clear sticky wrap to the front of the TT so that part cleans up quickly post-trip.
  • obsessive. we take off every weekend.sunday nite when we get home we wash out the fridge and clean the toilet.i have an epic bug collection.every couple weeks we drive thru a rainstorm at seventy, and they all get washed off.once a month the rig gets a total detailing, but no way is it getting it every single weekend.
  • You're semi-obsessive, as am I about keeping the vehicles in good condition. One thing I've found is that buffing on a good coat of wax makes cleaning much easier. I don't break out the buffer every time I use the vehicles or trailer. Once or twice a year is good enough for me.

Vacuuming and cleaning the interior panels, glass, dash is done as needed. It doesn't take but about 10 minutes to sparkle up the interior of my truck. The RV takes about the same if I don't deal with sterilizing the bathroom. Spray and wipe is easy.
  • We leave tomorrow for a week at the lake and I spent yesterday with my son washing the truck and fiver. We detail clean the inside of tbe fiver when we get home. I love to have them shine.
