I don't need any more info. I'll tell you right here and now I don't care what you towed, it DID NOT cause a cam lifter problem.
5.3's are known for these problems.
Fix the thing and move on. Whether that means moving up or driving what your have. I recommend you get aftermarket parts though.
Was talking to my mechanic about Ford's cam phaser problem when he was telling me he had fixed a lot of Chevy's with this cam problems as well.
