Did we break our Avalanche? Do I need to get a 2500?

The fact you towed only 6 times a year, leaves it highly unlikely towing was the root cause of this engine failing. I've known 3 owners of that generation truck and engine and all of them had either engine failure of transmissions failing at the worst possible times.
