Torklift has actually been around a lot longer than that and started in '76. I don't know how long they made tiedowns, but I know my friend put TorkLift SuperHitch and tiedowns on his '97 Ford when he bought it new. Maybe it was a Seattle area secret at the start.
As far as the fuel door "issue" as you call it, it only adds a few seconds to fill up time if you have FastGuns. Of course, HJ has it's own issues with extremely short tiedowns at a steep angle on the front and tiedowns that block the bumper on the rear.
I'm totally fine with people doing whatever solution they want although most probably should avoid this method with heavy campers. ;)
