The only diesel that was being developed for a half ton before the economy took a nose dive was the "Lion" v8. It's being used by Land Rover at this moment, but it was a 4.4 liter mill and the 2009 F-150 was originally designed around the idea of this turbocharged diesel. There was a prototype running around from 2008 to 2009 I believe. Unfortunately the economy tanked and we all know what happened to the big 3 from there. Here's a wiki in case you're curious. Would've been an awesome motor for a half ton or an alternative diesel motor for a 3/4 ton.
