Well, I owned one Gas Chevy 3500 dually and I owned one Chevy diesel 3500 dually.
Let me put it this way. After 100,000 miles, the gas engine was just shot but still had a great body! Maybe it was just too many miles towing? I don't know, but it was just shot.
After 100,000 miles on my Chevy diesel, the engine was strong as an ox, transmission was wonderful, and it towed fabulous. The only problem, the body wasn't keeping up with the engine and transmission. Electric mirrors started failing, fiberglass sides started cracking, rust started forming on the bottoms of the doors. Heated seats would not shut off. Sun room started making to much wind noise (but it was sealed solid when closed). And the cost to get everything fixed was just mounting. But it ran and towed fabulous! I suppose we just never drove it enough (low mileage) for it's age.
Pick your poison! The choice is your! (but I'll never own another gas tow vehicle again)... One work of advise, gas or diesel ... get a bigger truck than you think you need at the moment! You'll never regret it!
FYI, we're on our second diesel dually now, brand new! I'm really not sure what the fenders are made of though?
