I have a diesel, and I have a 5.7 Tundra. There are things I like on both, and things I don't really care for on both.
Since you are interested in the fuel economy, the diesel gets about 1 MPG better on the highway than the Tundra does, but the Tundra beats the diesel in town by 1, so empty they are a wash. Towing, the diesel beats it hands down both in town and highway by 3 MPG. If you are towing a lot I would go diesel, if it is a weekend every few months, the Tundra will work.
Both so far have been reliable. The diesel will go more miles, but you have to ask yourself how long do you really keep a vehicle? My 02 Tundra went 275,000, I sold it and the guy is still driving it around, I hope to get that out of the 2011 I have now.
