This is pretty much the hitting the nail on the head!! Multiple injection events, electronic injectors, not mechanical.
I love the way my Ram pulls, not the way it sounds! I winter, I start plugging the block heater at about 40 degrees, as the engine is much quieter if warm.
This (multi injection events per cycle) is by far the main reason the newer diesels are quiet although the 2011 Ford is considerably quieter than our 2010 GM. I believe there is other technology that contributes as well - things like the block and oil pan material.
