ib516 is exactly correct. That's the reason. There may be other things the manufacturers have done but I don't think they've done anything of any significance.
I bought a 2002 Duramx and I remember reading the explanation for why it was so quiet. You may remember that it was the first of the new generation diesels and it was REALLY quiet compared to the Fords or Dodges. It was because of the 2-step injection process as ib516 states. The interesting thing is that at a certain higher RPM (2200 ?) the computer switched over to one injection shot per cycle and at that point the engine became very noisy - just like my buddy's Cummins.
I just took delivery of a new F350 diesel and it's just as quiet, maybe even moreso, and I know it's for the same reason. But I'm still breaking it in so I haven't pushed the RPMs yet to see if it also has a 'roar'.
