Diesel Oil.....

I ran Delvac 1300 non-synthetic, then switched to Rotella TTT as it was on sale, but the metal numbers started to climb in the reports from Blackstone Labs. I switched back to Delvac, and all the numbers started to drop, now everything is back where it was before the switch to Rotella. Blackstone Labs said

"While it's impossible for there to be absolutely no bearing wear in 4,599 miles, it is possible for it to be so low that we can't measure it, and that's what we've got here." I went 6,000 miles on the last oil change, and all is still excellent.

Cheap and good oil. An excellent combination. I can generally get a gallon of Delvac for around $13.

If you know nothing about fuel filtration, you better start checking it out.
Genos garage is a great site to get your filters from, and Glacier diesel has some better filter assemblies.

Your current crop of diesel engine oils are now API CK4 oils and some changes have been made and some oil brands have taken a different approach when designing and marketing their oil. Some are oils are only rated for diesel engines(which are the ones I recommend) and some are diesel and gas engine rated (which are the ones I don't recommend). In addition the CK-4 specification removed the flat tappet valve train wear test requirement.

For your engine I would recommend Rotella, Valvoline Premium Blue or Motorcraft diesel only oils since the ZDDP anti wear additives are still above 1k ppm and these oils are only diesel engine rated and can be easily purchased at just about any store.

I would not recommend Delvac and Delo since they are now dual rated for both gas and diesel engines and the anti wear ZDDP have been reduced to ~800 ppm which allows them to be used in gas engines.

Whichever oil you choose be sure "NOT" to use any API FA-4 oils.

Does anyone know what the suggested replacement miles is based on? Highway? Hauling/towing? City? I'd think that use would play a big factor. My truck is used almost exclusively for towing.

No... the smell went away with the API CJ4 version.

Some dealer's take bids on bulk oil and then take the best deal.

I want to see what I'm getting in a can, whatever the cost.

All diesel approved oils will work in your diesel engine. They're all the same.

In the 2001 ran Delo 400 Dino oil, 10,000 mile changes, safe per BlackStone TBN testing. Could have gone more miles, 10K was about a year, so good timing. Fleetgaurd filters.
Replaced tappet cover gasket at 298,748 absolutely clean inside.
