That math is easy but when you pay $10k extra up front for the diesel, it takes an awful lot of miles to make up the difference.
Very few people will benefit from the extra MPG diesel provides when it runs 10-25% higher than gas.
You don't buy a diesel to save money... I bought mine because I wanted/needed the pulling power and could afford it. The mileage increase is just icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned. Yes you pay an upfront premium for diesel but much of that $10k will be re-cooped during re-sale.
Here in Norcal diesel and gas are damn near the same price. Midgrade is actually higher and what I had to run in my last truck when towing.
