Sadly, there are still many people who can't wrap their heads around the notion that I'm still ahead of the game when diesel is 10-15% more expensive per gallon, but drags my carcass 30% farther on each gallon.
That math is easy but when you pay $10k extra up front for the diesel, it takes an awful lot of miles to make up the difference.
Very few people will benefit from the extra MPG diesel provides when it runs 10-25% higher than gas.
You don't buy a diesel to save money... I bought mine because I wanted/needed the pulling power and could afford it. The mileage increase is just icing on the cake as far as I'm concerned. Yes you pay an upfront premium for diesel but much of that $10k will be re-cooped during re-sale.
Here in Norcal diesel and gas are damn near the same price. Midgrade is actually higher and what I had to run in my last truck when towing.
We are in agreement. You buy a diesel because you need more pulling power or you just have a desire to have a diesel. While nice any fuel efficency benefit for a typical RV'er will be negligible.
I disagree with another posters comment the diesel engines last longer. I believe that is a relic from 25-30yrs ago when 100k miles and a gas engine was done. It's nothing to get 250k miles out of a modern gas engine and by then the rest of the truck is typically falling apart. (I get the same chuckle when the diesel pusher MH guys talk about million mile drivetrains.)
