Different capacity hitches on 2500HDs?

I was at the dealer and was looking at the hitches on 13' 2500s. Some had TW rating of 1500lbs and some had a rating of 2000lbs. At first I thought there were some SRW 3500s mixed in but I double checked and they were 2500s. Almost all the window stickers were falling down in the window so it was difficult to compare trucks. Can anyone explain the reason for 2 different hitch ratings. The hitch itself looks identical.

You got me, maybe. I saw that he owns a Silverado and was asking about 2500HD's. 2013 Silverado 2500HD's (I own one) are rated at the exact two weights that he quoted, (1.500 and 2,000) depending on their bed length. Maybe there are other 2500's out there with that setup, but I doubt it. The OP can let us know if I am right or wrong.

He was on a dealers lot, not checking out his own truck. You just got lucky that he's a diehard Chevy owner. It seems that those two classifications of recievers would be pretty common.

Mystery solved. Long bed 2500HD's are rated at 2,000 pounds weight carrying, Standard bed models are rated at 1,500 pounds, per the owner's manual. Weight distributing is optional for all 2500's and 3500's

How do you know that, when the OP never stated the truck brand?

Interesting...maybe the 2K hitch trucks were models equipped with some kind of optional extra heavy duty towing package.??
    Did you ask?
. They were closed. I'll be going back tomorrow. As was said, it's probably determined by a certain package.
  • In the past they only rated the hitch for what the rig was rated for. Size of running gear and extra tow packages are most likely the reasons.
