digital gauge for engine, trans temp etc

I have a 2004 F150 TV. At one time I was thinking of putting in a performance chip...after thinking it over I decided the chip was not a good idea, for me at least. Anyway, while looking at the chips I noted that they had a digital readout that mounted on the dash and I think provided some neat info like engine temp, trans temp, etc.

Does anyone know if you can buy a plug in play digital type readout for this type of info? ( w/o a lot of wiring required )

thanks,
  • Thanks, I'm going to order one. Got a trip planned this month to NC mountains. Will be a handy tool as I have not pulled my TT any in the hills.
  • Look at the Ultragauge as well. I have one in my Envoy and it works well. Up to 8 gauges on each screen and I think there are 7 screens. (I only use two of them with any regularity.)

Thanks for all the replies. The scan gauge 11 looks like what I am looking for if it will display all the info on my F150. I will check it out...has anyone installed one on an F150? Mine is an 04.

The edge is nice but a little pricey for what I want to do.

Elmwood bluetooth / torgue is priced right but I don't have a smart phone. My Nexus requires a wifi signal to work on internet so I am thinking it will not work with this but I will check it out.

    I installed one in my 2006 F150.
really like it,but it will not display oil temp in the 5.4
  • Just FYI occasionally you can find the edge and the scangauge on Amazon's warehouse deals page. I purchased my edge from there for a substantial savings. Does not appear to be anything there now but stuff shows up all the time.

    warehoused deals

+1 on the ultragauge. cheaper than the scangauge and better display IMO. I use one and am happy with it.
  • ++++ for the ScanGauge. I had one on my 2006 motor home, then used it on my 2001 F150 specifically for trans temp. There is some programming involved but aside from that it's worth it. Also good for showing codes. I currently have a 2012 F150 and it has trans temp built in but I'm keeping the ScanGauge. It's very versatile.
  • Autozone's price was as good as on internet except I have to pay state taxes so I bought a SG11 there. Had to program trans temp and a couple of other gauges in but it was not bad and seems to work well so far. Ultragauge looks nice too, price is better, but I'm not sure it will do the scans etc than SG11 will do. Anyway, I already pulled the trigger before I heard of the UG.

Maybe I should start a new topic, but here is the next question. Where do I find safe operating temp ranges etc.? ie: trans temp, engine water temp, etc. Obviously I should be able to figure out "normal" for my truck now but how far can these be exceeded (when towing for intance)? In other words I want to be able to pull over and cool off before the tranny etc. is fried if there is ever a problem. Is there a chart or something somewhere with this info?
    Thanks,
  • A $50 Android based pre-paid cell phone and $20 for the Torque app/BT dongle is another solution.
