You have to time the DC traffic if you stick to I95, but it can be done. Towing a trailer I would probably recommend getting off the NJTP at exit 10 towards Perth Amboy over the outer bridge crossing, follow 440 up the W. Shore Expressway to I278 east (staten island expressway) over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, Follow 278 through Brooklyn to I495 to continue heading east (do not take a motorhome or trailer on any of the LI parkways!!! They have low clearances and that could be a costly mistake.
I would not recommend the GW bridge and down I87 (Major Deegan Expressway) to he JFK bridge, every time I have had to deal with the GW its always major delays unless you are lucky enough to find that one small window to get through.
You can also get off the NJTP at exit 13 and take the Goethels bridge as well, its a straigher shot since that is I278.
