Years ago, travelling in a long van, we needed to do something like this. I got a strip of alumimun awning channel. And mounted it the entire length of the van, right above the doors. Got a cheap blue tarp, and sewed a small rope into one edge. When onsite, we just slid the tarp into the channel, used tent posts and stakes on the outside. No leaks on the van side, folded up and tossed inside for travel. Sold it with the van years later.
