Do many campgrounds discriminate against TC's...?

Sorry if this has been asked before. I did a search and came up empty.

I'm planning a 6- to 9-month trip around the U.S. with a truck camper and will stay at commercial campgrounds occasionally. But I've heard many of them don't allow truck campers. How common is this?

Also, is there a camping membership that is a "best choice" for truck campers? Passport America? Good Sam? Others?

Thanks in advance! :B
  • If all you are planning are short stays, there should be no problems. Where it gets a little more complicated is the longer term stays. Many parks will not allow the camper to be removed from the truck and if they do they generally frown on storing stuff underneath. Seen people use the space under a removed TC as a storage unit too often and it does almost universally look like slum city. You can make a case for "discrimination" for every type of RV out there. There are Class A only resorts, parks that are too small for big rigs, parks that don't allow older RVs, parks that adult only, the list goes on and on. They are not trying to get your goat, they have a business plan. If it doesn't include your situation, it's nothing personal.
  • There are a few that are that way but like the poster above stated they are usually Resort type of campground/

The one that I know that doesn't allow TCs is Tiger Run Resort right outside of Dillon, CO.
  • The places that don't allow TCs are, for the most part, the expensive RV "resorts", the type that only allow Class A pushers that are less than 10 years old. You probably wouldn't want to stay at any of those places, anyway ;)
  • We have had a tc for over 10 yrs. Some discrimination does exist in large AZ motorhome campgrounds. You could read about them in Trailer Life. However, we usually have not camped in the 300+ rv sites where they exist. We have never been turned away even though we, in the past, had an older than 10yr truck, but newer camper. If the ad for the RV resort (place) is not clear--you can always phone ahead and ask instead of heading directly to it.So--the answer is not many campgrounds discriminate against tc.I believe also that when you arrive at the office to check in it pays to be in a reasonably clean outfit--not scruffy. First appearance and manner is important.
  • I have both 5th wheel and a Truck Camper. I would not hesitate to take off tomorrow with my truck camper anywhere in the US. You may rarely run into a problem but not enough to worry about. Probably could be a little more of a problem if your rig was very old or in disrepair.
  • For the most part your money is as good as anyones to most campground owners as long as the rig looks decent. State parks are no problem as they allow all.
  • passport america is the only "membership" I would be interested in, 50% off. but check out the locations and restrictions to see if you can live with them. Good sam gives the same % off as AARP, AAA, etc.
