Most people seem to feel that the spotter is there to assist the driver in placing the camper, when in fact, the opposite is true. The spotter is carrying the weight of the entire operation on her/his shoulders. They need to put the camper where it needs to be with no accidents. All the driver does is, well, drive. And listen to what the spotter says.
When you are backing, you are relying on your wife to tell you the correct information. You don't second guess her, do you? So why second guess her now? It is important for her to do this in the way most comfortable for her. If she doesn't want walkie talkies, then don't force them on her. They won't work simply because she doesn't want to use them. I'm not saying she would intentionally mess up, just that she's going to be much better using the method she likes best.
My wife is a stellar deck hand and spotter. I trust her implicitly and never question her directions or argue. We take our time, move slow, and never yell. Like others, if I lose sight of her, I stop until I can see her again.
We both have cell phones with Jawbone earpieces that have worked well for night time backing.
I have thought about getting a rope light to lay on the ground at night to back along side of, but haven't asked yet what she thinks of the idea.
