We have a pair of walkie talkies. More often than not we don't bother using them, but when we do it is way easier to back in. We also got them to support us when we are in different places. Cell phone works in many locations, but not in many of the parks we visit. By the way, It's worth the $85 and bother to get a license. You can then legally use the higher power channels. Many walkies come with both the public channels and a couple of the restricted ones. The restricted channels are 2 watt power; the public under a watt. A few years ago we bought three business band walkies (Radio Shack was clearing them out). These require a different license that ends up costing about $500 but has 5 watts of power. The 2 watt units have a range of at least a mile, the 5 watt over 5 miles. We don't bother with the business band stuff now. The 2 watt units work for every purpose we have.
One word of warning: if you don't have the license don't use the higher power channels. If you get caught the fine is $10,000 for each use. The FCC does enforce this.
Are you talking about the GMRS radios or Ham?
