Here in California we are in a pretty serious drought. I normally back flush my black tank several times. This wastes a lot of time and tons of water, but the thought of any doo doo lurking in my tank...

The best cleaning action I've found for black tanks is driving down the road for an hour or more with 2-3 gallons of water in the tank and whichever chemicals you use.
As full-timers and NPS/COE/BLM/FWS/USFS volunteers, we sometimes stay put in one location for one to four months. Then I flush the black tank about once a month.
We've used an enzyme product and been very happy with it for a couple years. Never had smells.
