We always hear diesel trucks warming up before pulling out of the campground and I always assumed they needed to get to a certain operating temp, with our 3/4 ton gasser we just start it and go down the road pulling our 10K# rig.
Out in the mountain west where we camp we often enter the highway with steep inclines and outdoor temps in the 30s and 40s with fluid temps as you described above and have never experienced a lag in performance. Let your diesel truck warm up a bit and you should be good to go.
