Cold idling a diesel is a waste of fuel, and can also be hard on your cylinder walls and oil. Per Cummins 3-5 minutes is max, and 10 minutes is considered excessive. A fast idle is a much better way to warm up, but still TOO slow to do much good. Cummins also lists 160° as the min temp for full power operation, but I usually wait until the thermostat has cycled.
For those that have them, be cautious using and exhaust brake on a cold engine. The rings don't fully seal when cold and the high cylinder pressure will push soot into the oil, which degrades the oil quicker. If I am going to use my EB to warm the engine I let the coolant reach at least 65°.
Start it up, let it idle until you have full oil pressure and drive it easy until it's warmed up. The efficient nature of the diesel makes it slow to warm up. I can make it 12 miles in the cooler months before my thermostat opens without a load.
I realize the OP has a Powerstroke and I listed some Cummins stuff, but diesel is diesel and for the most part they all work nearly the same (some just last longer and make more hp per CI)
^^^^^^^ Good post. :)
