We use ours, we have a 30 foot bunkhouse, so with 2 kids running to the outhouse just means work.

I don't find it hard to maintain the toilet. It WILL stink when you open the valve, it's just nature doing it's thing. Stinky bacteria like to eat the rich, to them, stuff we push out our bodies.

We use the chemicals and clean it every trip. The smell is never so bad we can't live with it.

Does their house smell cause they use the toilet???

RV's are self contained.
12V DC power for lights, water pump
Propane for cooking, fridge cooling, furnace
Fresh water tank to supply drinking, washing & service water
Sinks/showers and toilet for using
Waste water holding tanks

Sinks/showers have 'P' traps (just like houses) that hold water in trap and provide a vapor barrier from grey waste water tank

Toilet (unlike house toilet) doesn't have a built in 'P' trap because it is a gravity flush toilet BUT is designed to HOLD WATER in the toilet bowl (just like house toilet does) and provide a vapor barrier to black waste water tank

Wast water tanks (black & grey) have vent lines to provide a means of relieving pressure build up and allowing odors out above roof line.


RVs are just mini houses on wheels.

I'm half-and-half. I use my own restroom at night always and during the day if a campground facility isn't convenient or is dirty, etc. But, if the campground facilities are in good shape and conveniently placed, I will use them as much as possible during the day just to stretch out my fresh water and my black tank capacity.

When I had my trailer, I didn't use my toilet at all. Good thing. One time on the way home, I lost the dump valve pipes. Would have been an ugly mess all over the highway...

Of course we use our facilities, also the shower. We bought a travel trailer so that we don't have to hike across the RV park to the restrooms and showers. One of the reasons that we bought our current trailer is the easy access to the bathroom when we are on the road. Any odor from the holding tanks can be eliminated with proper maintenance.

We generally use ours only for #1 and use the CG facilities for #2.
The reason is we only camp during weekends so the heavy stuff would not have enough time to break down in the tank and we could end up with problems.

Houses have bathroom exhaust fans, RV's have bathroom exhaust fans but they are often cheesy. Upgrade to a quieter 3 speed fantastic or similar. Use tank chemical or pine sol as needed. The last place we want to go is to a community toilet. I dont get it?
