The new standards do create some issues, but nothing like the disaster of the 1973 catalytic converter installs on gas engines.
Smog is emissions from cars and diesels. Small particulates from EFI Gas engines are a lot worse than NOx, for actual human health. NOx helps destroy the Ozone layer. CO and CO2 do not make you feel well and in concentrated amounts are lethal.
