That ole 24 valve doesn't have the camshaft that the next gen Cummins has which is conducive to a "in cylinder EGR". Along with the "3rd injection event" this is what makes the oil black so quickly... soot.
To keep the oil cleaner longer in that 2005, one could toss in a camshaft from a 24 valve or buy one of the new camshafts which removes/reduces that 3rd injection event, but you'll have to install a larger turbo as well, amongst other mods.
