I agree with the 3rd gen 2004.5 and up comments about soot. But draining your oil over night will not fix the problem and here is why.

Notice that large indent in the pan? There is no way you are ever going to get all of the oil out of that pan. Even if you let it sit for a week!
I ran 25,000 mile oil changes in my 2004 Ram with filters ever 5,000 to 10,000 miles (according to how much towing I did) and always sent a sample to black stone at 10,000 miles. My reports always showed the oil could have gone past the 25,000 mile mark but I never did.
I wish I could find the pics of the upper half of my engine during the valve adjustment. The guy at the Cummins shop could not believe my truck had 120K on it. He said it looked like it only had 25,000 miles.
