Dodge front suspension

We are looking at a new 5500 Ram chassis cab, as a base for a camper anyone have experience with this truck?
Looking at 6.4 litre gas engine with auto trans 4 x 4.
Our main concern is the front suspension, this may be simply to much reading on the internet.
Not bashing Ram just need your personal experiences.
  • The 4500 and 5500 use a different front end than the pickups. It uses a 5-link front end with a Magna Steyr wide track front axle.

  • I have 24K miles on my 5500 with the Cummins/Aisin and no problems to date. Be aware that the chassis cabs derate the gasoline and diesel tunes for longer duty cycles at full output. Also the 6.4 in the chassis cab only uses the cylinder deactivation for PTO operation and will not deactivate cylinders while driving (worse mileage than the pickup). The dual tanks in the 60" CA were not available until the 2016 models - I suggest you get this option.

    What's the concern?
And that's a lot of truck (and presumably a lot of camper) for the gas engine.
  • Yes, at least on the 2500/3500 the front end is a weak link wearing out premature, but that is the only short fall plus easy and cheap to have rebuilt at 100k miles if necessary. I wouldn't have any hesitation on the better and heavier built 5500 front end.

Just wondering what you plan on carrying that you need a 5500 but still want a gas engine?

If you want to talk performance of the 6.4 ask away and see my sig for how I roll with mine in a 3500.
  • The gas engine is fine, remember we ALL had gas engines a decade or two ago. People pulled 36' 5th wheels, 6-horse trailers, you name it with gas big-blocks that had less power than a new Hemi. We got it done.
I can't imagine the Ram 5500 front end isn't stout enough.
