I bought my 2004.5 Ram after a relatively extensive search. I also shared the frustration that most 2500s were lifted and modified and many 3500s were horse haulers that had been ridden pretty hard. I persevered and found a 2WD 3500 Laramie dually with 62k miles that had no towing history three years ago. I think the fact that it is 2WD turned off other buyers so calls on it were light. One guy turned it down because it wasn't white. I did pay $27k for it which was probably high but I sold the canopy and bed slide it had which brought it down to $26k. I am happy with the deal.
Bottom line, I love the truck. It is just getting ready to turn 80k now so I plan to keep it a long time. I pull a 10k 5er and it does fine. It has been to Yellowstone so maybe 7,600 feet elevation, plenty of power. The 4 speed auto wouldn't be my first preference. It may not be enough truck to pull the heavier rigs offered now days. If your long term plans are to go big and heavy I would look at new trucks.
Good luck with your search.
This is very helpful information. I'm also considering 2 wheel drive vs 4 wheel drive, and found a sweet truck at a good price with 2 wheel drive. So far, those seem to be on a dealer lot somewhat longer than a comparable 4x4. Since my current trailer weighs only 6000 lbs fully loaded, and if I upgrade trailers, it will not be substantially more weight (not considering a 5er), then a 2x4 tow vehicle seems like it could be a good choice.
