Dodge V10 owners...how do you like it?

Saw a low mileage '01 Dodge Ram 2500 V10 2WD going for a very reasonable price. Thinking of using it as a puller for a 5'ver that will still needs to be purchased.

Any comments on the Dodge v10?

I have a 99 2500 V10 and use it to tow our TT. Really like the truck but like said it's thirsty and the dash sucks. But that said, we did 8.5mpg on our trip from Flagstaff to Quartzsite last fall and about the same back home from there. Seems to have plenty of power for our 8000+lb trailer and never even starts to overheat. True they don't get the MPG a Cummins does but for the difference in cost I can buy a lot of gas.

Is there a lot of difference in used in the 2nd gen trucks with V10 or Cummins?

    I picked up a 98 2wd 5 sp 313k for 5k.

  • Owned 2003 3500 for 4 years. Was a great truck. Gas mileage was not great but was similar to my brothers Chevy 8.1l. Only complaint was it being a 4 speed.
  • My 96 V-10 dually is sitting in my driveway as it has for most of its 18 years(25,000) original miles.....it is a gas guzzler, off hand about 10 mpg not towing.
  • I had a '99. The head gasket and the fuel pump cratered at about 100K miles. The top of the dash cracked all to hell sooner than that and I put an overlay on it (there's aftermarket replacements now). Plenty of pulling power though. I thought it was a little on the thirsty side compared to a used GMC 8.0 liter Suburban I traded it for.
  • Hi.

I still have my '96 ram 2500hd, V-10, It now has disc brake's all four corners.
This July I will rebuild the power plant, 286,+ miles.

    Well its July 21, 2014.
The Dodge went in for the engine repair with 286,438 miles. Two week from now I will get it back with a new heart (engine).

Needs Painting, Seats covers, 3 dent's meed some attention, and the rear bumper.

Hay what do you expect after 17 years on the California's highways.

    OK!
NOTE: Since MPG has been referenced. Starting 13.8, 13.9, and 14.0 that is 1996.

Ok! Now mostly 11.5 to 14.0. Depending on where I happen to be at the time.

With the 31' 5th Whl. Again when and where I was, it ranged for 10.0 to 12.4 mpg.
I got the truck to TOW! I really didn't care about mileage. I didn't want to add or modify it (gas-oil-water) and go. It did keep me at road speed (legal) W/O anything else done.

Subject Oil Changes: Yes! Every 3,000 miles or as close to it as possible.
  • From what I have been told they are a good pulling engine but way more thirsty than the Cummins.
