Does silicone have any place on a travel trailer?

Anyone still on the fence about silicone or wishing to find out how it performs can do a simple experiment. Gun a bead of silicone onto a piece of metal and put it in the backyard or next to where you park your RV. Leave it in the weather for two years and report back your findings.

Silicone is an excellent sealant when in compression between two surfaces and not exposed to UV. Left exposed, not so much. The Geocel polymer sealants (Proflex being one) are far superior to silicone on an RV.

I keep a tube of clear silicone in my tool box and use it all the time. My trailer has hung side walls supported by moldings. The moldings were caulked at the factory with silicone. Whenever a screw comes out it is backed up by a dab of silicone when replaced. When things lift and need to be glued down out comes the silicone. Maiden voyage in our trailer we discovered the shower had not been caulked, out comes the silicone. When a caulk line needs to be replaced I slice the old silicone off with a razor blade, wipe it with a solvent and reapply.

There are 2 problems with silicone. 1. It will break down and fail to seal anymore. 2. Once you've applied silicone caulking, nothing, not even more silicone caulking will adhere to it so you'll never get it sealed again.
