Half tons usually/often come with P metric tires with too low recommended pressure. Airing them up to max can help a lot. A set of LTs can help more. My half ton truck is approaching 20 years old, and had a poor reputation right from the factory for whimpy rear springs and sag. After adding a leaf and LT tires, the truck was rock solid towing, even when overloaded on payload. A couple years ago I went back to (heavier) P metric tires which resulted in losing some of that stability. I have to be very attentive to air pressure now, but it's very doable and not at all a white knuckle experience.
I think they are marginalized by the "weight police" routinely.
But it appears to me that Ram has chosen to aim their 1500s at a very different target audience than their other trucks. Obviously 3/4 ton and up are much more capable.
