Really, the sideways placement of those 4x4s was the problem.
The old truck beds took all the firewood and junk you wanted to throw at them though.
I’d strongly recommend everyone who is hauling a camper put a 2x10 or 2x12 across the front wall of your truck bed. An unplanned brake slam, especially downhill or various other circumstances, will result in a bent front bed wall. I’ve bent several over the years.
I don’t care whose tiedowns you have, you’ve got a two ton load in the bed that really isn’t that firmly anchored in place.
This time, rather than bolt it on, I cut it to exactly fit the ribs in my bed sidewalls and I place it in those, about a foot and a half behind the front wall. Lets me carry stuff there and it stays up front. (When your truck makes well over 1000 ft-lbs, that can be an issue lol).
When I want to load the camper I just lift it out and place it up front.
