He is using a wrench to tighten the hold-downs. Check out https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/bolt-torque-load-calculator-d_2065.html . Assuming a 1/2 inch thread diameter, a torque of 20 ft-lbs (not a lot with a 12-inch wrench) yields a bolt tension of 2500 lbs per tiedown assuming I entered the numbers correctly. No wonder the box bent.
