This a transmission and a warranty problem. Even if you are running the Aisin 68 auto, which I would certainly recommend over the G-56, you pass the new truck warranty, and replace the unit with a "new" Mopar reman at twice the price, you may not get their 3yr warranty if they can find a loop hole. Be warned. I got screwed by Mopar, it might save others from getting screwed.
They have replaced the Aisin with a new heavier Aisin this year. Aisin is a Toyota company. Best wait a few years for customer testing. Yeah, as if we have few years. So that's why I would go with Allison. They've got the bugs worked out of the Isuzu diesel, now as well. That's why the Chevy. The Ford diesel is interesting, it is a Ford not a Navistar,(a good thing) but doesn't have the very long track record of the Cummins or even of the Isuzu. Duramax is advertising speak.
The G-56,has to be babied, should be NOT be shifted on hills. By the time you get into 5th, you need 4th. I live in B.C. The only time I was glad it was a manual, was on muddy logging roads.
The third G-56 was a dud from the factory and was not driven except shop to shop. I had to drive it like 3-on-the-tree from the 50s.
2nd is the usual start gear. Hopeful, it shouldn't need too many parts. This time maybe I will get a tranny as good as they come!?
Yes, in hindsight I've made a few mistakes, Lease-return and the Mercedes-Benz manual over Allison auto.
