My '83 F-100 had a manual 4-spd OD. While there really wasn't such a thing as "speed shifting" due to the long throw it wasn't hard to get to the next gear at a reasonable rate. I have no idea how long a steamboat takes to compare it to what you say the Ram manual requires, but I had no problem upshifting on an upgrade. I could easily grab another gear before loosing that much speed.
That '83 was the last truck I bought with a manual tranny and I don't miss 'em a bit.
It appears if you re-read the post...the POSTER is the one that stated how the first owner drove the truck...probably the reason Downwindtracker2 stated what he did...I re-read first post and it appears the OP Knows what the first owner did; that's the way I read it..
