We used to occasionally. If we could we would rather take the bicycles if the distance isn't too far.
As far as claiming a spot usually a couple chairs and a tablecloth is all you need or if it's a pay campground paying the fee and posting the ticket.
We tow a jeep now and that has been better especially getting around town where parking may not be as available for a CC dually or heading off road.
