I might take a long look at PacBrake “Loadlash” engine brake as an add on to assist the factory EB.
You do not need it at the load you tow, or anything up to your trucks rating. Chris
Chris, my 2001 with the PacBrake (turbo mounted) and 5 speed and total manual control of the EB worked awesome, could almost come to a full stop with just the EB.
I just need to learn the new system.
I think the main reason you’re seeing such a difference is because of the automatic transmission. My truck is much as you describe with your 2001 in that the EB is VERY strong and goes right down to about 900 RPM before it cuts off. I rode with a buddy in his 2014 Ram 3500 with the 68RFE transmission and asked him why he wasn’t using his exhaust brake. He said because it makes very little difference; he turned it on and put on Tow/Haul mode and it was slightly better but nowhere near as good as the braking on my truck. He agreed because he has another buddy with a G56 truck that works like mine does.
I love going down steep hills in campgrounds towing the fiver with no brake applications! :B
