DEF and the DPF are both part of the emission control system on Diesel trucks. The DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) is sprayed into the exhaust system (not the engine) and causes a reaction in one of the catalysts that is also part of the exhaust system. That reaction results in a reduction of the Oxides of Nitrogen in the exhaust.

The DPF (Diesel Exhaust Filter) is to filter the soot particulates out of the exhaust. Your truck uses DEF, and has a DPF, but they do not directly interact. They are there to reduce two separate pollutants.

That is my understanding of the system.

To go further: my truck has a DPF and a catalyst (called a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst or DOC), but does not use DEF. My truck only had to meet the 2007 EPA reg's for Diesels, and does that by relying more on EGR (Exhaust Gas Re-circulation) to reduce the Oxides of Nitrogen in the exhaust to the limits that were in effect at that time. Your truck also uses EGR, but to a much lesser degree than my truck. Because of the use of DEF, the Oxides of Nitrogen are reduced so much that your truck doesn't need to use EGR as much.
