DPF message

I have a 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500 diesel with 16000 miles. Usually, if the DPF gets low I'll get a message on the DIC telling me it's low and I have 500 miles to add to it. This morning when I started the truck it said EXHAUST FLUID SYSTEM SEE OWNER'S MANUAL. It also said I had 99 miles to go before it would restrict the speed to 65. There was a little symbol on the dash indicating DPF. So, I added DPF fluid. I know it's full now. I've driven the truck about 12 miles and the message is still there. I can't erase it. I've tried using the arrow keys on the right side of the steering wheel but nothing happens. Is there a way to erase it? It's Sunday, of course, so no one to call. I'm at a campground away from home. Should I call a local dealer tomorrow?
  • Thanks for all the comments. I finally got it in at a dealer (about 25 miles away). They ran every diagnostic test known to modern man and everything was good. Apparently, just one of those electronic things that pop up occasionally. They reset it and everything seems to be working fine. They said the 21 models have an actual readout that tells you how much fluid you have in the tank. No more guesswork. Again, thanks for all your comments.
  • My biggest gripe with the whole DEF set up is there is no DEF gauge.
Why can't we have a gauge and know our DEF level vs. relying on a glorified idiot light?
  • Did you have a pretty long trip to the campground or have you been primarily making a series of short trips? If it's the latter, you may have a DPF filter that hasn't been able to run a complete cleaning regen cycle. If that's the case, drop the truck down a gear or two and run it a little harder for 20 to 30 minutes so that the exhaust and DPF filter can get hot enough to complete its regen cleaning cycle.

If it's a DEF indication and since the indicator is still lit after adding DEF, then you'll need to pull the code to see what's happening.

So sorry about the timing of your problem and I hope that it's a quick and easy fix!
  • I have a 2011 GMC 2500 duramax and just had the same thing happen last week. I have a lower limp mode of 55mph in my truck. I'm also on a long road trip with my camper. bottom line I had to stop at a dealer or I would have eventually became disabled. Great system BTW I had to have the DEF tank replaced as it had bad sensors/heating elements. That's the second tank replacement. Last one was about 5 years ago. It's all covered under the extended GMC emissions warranty but that doesnt help when you are on a trip and laid up for 3 days getting it repaired. I was lucky and was still able to keep my reservations but this diesel emissions system with it's countdown to complete disablement is terrible. There has to be a better system. or maybe it's time to go back to gas. They dont have any of this ****.
bottom line you have to go to the dealer. hopefully he can get you in quickly. I wish you luck
  • last summer I was in Florida on vacation and i received a message something like hat. BUT it said I had 50 miles till limp mode.

I filled the tank ( only took about 2 gallons out of 5 ) as well and the light stayed on... The following Monday Morning I found a local Ford dealer and headed his way, when I got into the truck to go, everything was clear?

He scanned the system and came up dry, no codes, no nothing.. ? It happened on my way home to PA while towing my trailer, and also went away before I could scan it...

It was fine from that day on ?
  • DEF is diesel exhaust fluid.
    DPF is diesel particulate filter.
Make sure you are reading messages correctly.
  • Call the dealer. Need to reset computer and possibly clean the def system.
