you need to measure the AMP draw of each magnet... bad magnet or wires for magnets..
but the issue with grease and bearing.... wrong bearing/race.... ??? OVERLOAD, (Weight)
and you had the drums "Cut" (turned)... around here that is almost a lost art... New or nothing. same with cars and truck drums and rotors.
What would be the way to determine the AMP draw of the magnets?
Yes, I machined the drums. I have a brake lathe that can cut rotors and drums and also have an adapter to machine flywheels too. Its a RELS Model 204. A auto parts store was going out of business and I couldn't pass up the deal on it. I mainly got it for machining the rotors and drums of our antique cars since, like you said, not that many places are doing it anymore.
The previous bearings and races were the same ones that were in there before when we made a trip down to VA (9 hrs for us each way) and we had no issues. The issue happened when we went an hour and a half away to a show in our own state. Luckily we were staying at my father in laws house and I was able to check out the trailer there. The new bearings and races are Timken ones and are the same part number as what the Dexter ones were and were matched up to the old ones to assure they were the same. The races are fully seated in the drum hub so I doubt that is the issue. I also installed them with a race and seal driver tool.
The spindles are fine and show no evidence of heating up or discoloring, scoring, whatever.
As for bent axles or jumped curbs..... prior to this and after this problem, we have not hit any curbs or anything. The only thing that did happen prior to this heat issue was that we had a tread on the pass side that started to separate but never came off the tire or even broke the tread.
Again, the color insulation that the trailer repair / supply place gave me was black and we had white on the driver side previously. I was under the assumption that since it was a new part, that they knew which amp magnet we needed as they asked what color the wiring was over the phone before I went there. Maybe that is the issue? Although, wouldn't the pass side be doing the same thing as they are black as well? I still have the old backing plate assemblies and can double check what the pass side color was.
