OP, I went with a metal carport and strongly recommend it to anyone wanting to cover their RV. My father and father-in-law used cloth covers and I remember the struggle, cussing, torn covers, wet covers, insects, etc associated with the cloth covers. They were such a pain in the neck that oftentimes they weren't used in between trips, leaving the campers out in the elements a lot of the summer.
I bought a metal carport from Carolina Carports last year and LOVE it. I don't have to worry about anything, I pull the camper out when we leave, I back it under when we get home. I don't have to worry about a wet cover, don't have to climb up on the roof after a long drive home and I don't have to find a place to store it while I am gone on trips.
It keeps my camper clean and dry (dry is the most important part...) It keeps the ground around my camper clean and dry so its easier to load and unload even in inclement weather. It keeps snow and branches off the roof. It allows me to keep my slide open, making the camper more accessible all the time. It allows me to leave my windows and roof vents open so I get fresh air circulating throughout and no mildew odors building up. It keeps the trailer cleaner which is HUGE for me because I don't wash it but once a year whether it needs it or not!
The structure isn't "permanent" because it can be removed and reassembles elsewhere. I paid about $2400 for mine and plan to stay in my house for 11 more years at least. That means that it will cost me about $200 a year for covered storage in my own yard, a rather inexpensive price. In theory I could disassemble it, move it to the new house and reassemble it and keep using it... or I could sell it for a couple hundred dollars when I'm done with it.
I run an extension cord (exterior rated) to my camper and a 30amp to 15amp adaptor and keep mine plugged in year round. That keeps the battery charged via the invertor. It also allows us to go out and start the fridge a day or two before we leave.
