the only downside I personally would see is extra cost of 2 more tires and possibly higher registration fees. As for tires my srw truck has 20" wheels and the tires cost considerably more than my fathers tires on his dually which at 17". so maybe that would offset the cost of the 2 extra tires.
assuming the same tire pressure with dually vs. SRW, the total contact area of the rear tires will be virtually the same in both cases.
contact patch shape will be different. with SRW will be long and narrow, dually will be short and wide. Contact patch shape has a definite impact on traction. for getting moving, long and narrow usually wins over short and wide. for lateral stability, short and wide wins over long and narrow. May be a strong reason why duallys are more stable with a big load.
