I cringe when I read posts here from people who say they're just fine because they have 100 pounds to spare in their GVWR. If I had less than 20% left over as safety margin when fully loaded, I'd buy a bigger truck or a smaller trailer. 3,000 pounds of tongue weight plus passengers, gear and 90 gallons of diesel fuel still leaves me with over 3,000 pounds of available payload capacity in my truck bed. I know it's overkill, but I'm just fine with that.
You do realize, if you are running right at max GVWR, you still have a built in safety margin...right...
The official ratings are based on a reasonable safety margin.
Maybe they are, and maybe they're not. I prefer not to take chances with the one life I have to live. I will never be one of the people on this forum asking, "Is my truck enough to tow this?"
Your mileage may vary.
No "maybe" about it. To imply otherwise is to spread false information.
The "is my truck enough to tow this?" is a completely different subject where people are concerned about exceeding the ratings. In that case, you are eating into the safety margin or if excessive exceeding it.
As long as you can afford it, there is no harm in using a dually to tow a pop-up but to say you need one to be safe is silly.
