I will have to respectively disagree. The side wall does nothing for holding the tread from moving side to side. It's the air pressure in the tire pushing out away from the center of the wheel that keeps the tire from moving side to side.
It's actually a combination of both. All side walls have a natural stiffness, some (like a low profile runflat) are much stiffer than others (say a P-rated 225/80 tire). An E rated tire is stiffer than a C rated, because of thicker sidewalls. Think to the extreme case - put a bucket loader tire on a pickup, and it'll be perfectly stiff running 0 psi!
For EACH case, adding air pressure would increase its lateral stiffness further. A runflat at 35psi is stiff than when it's flat, an E rated LT tire at 80psi is stiffer than a C at 55 psi, all things being equal.
But that wasn't my point. Regardless if we agree where a tire gets its lateral stiffness from, 4 tires on an axle would always be stiffer than 2 tires on an axle.
