Ironically, the redundancy (DRW requiring longer valve stems) is what contributed to your flat.

Most trucks do not carry a spare. BUT, a super single weighs less than duals, has better stopping, traction forward, mpg's etc. The ONLY reason for staying with duals is as noted, the human factor of the redundancy factor if a flat occurs.

Many class 8 trucks use a std sized tire in front, and singles in the rear. so two sizes, then I have seen drop axels with a different sized yet, along with different sizes on the trailer. IE 3-5 different tire sizes over the whole rig.

If I had an option for my dually, the rears would be a 435 width, probably in the 40-50 series range for height %. Fronts I have already removed the 215-85-16 and gone with a 245-75-16 as that tire gives me better steering, tire life etc vs the 215's on the rear and when on the front. Then again, I run tractions on the rear, and a hwy on the front, do not rotate, even tho it is a 4wd. Been doing that for 130 of the 150k miles.

Reality is, a 265-285 width tire on the rear, with enough ply rating, WILl handle any load we as DOT class 3 owners will put on it, along with what the DOT allows for lbs per inch width before being considered over wt per the federal bridge laws.

At the end of the day, there is usually more than one way to skin a cat per say.

Biggest issue with running SS tires out back is the spare. If your load is more then a single normal tire can take, you would need 2 spares - one for the front 1 for the rear. If you use 22.5/24.5 SS tires they are everywhere. If you are on a smaller rim they will have to be ordered and you are down for a day or three with a tire failure.

That setup would save me $16 every round trip on the Chesapeake BBT.

I've imagined having a super single BIG truck with tandems-I've seen the setup on conventional haulers and the rigs don't look as obnoxious as a full tandem tractor's 8 tires out back-throw huge fuel tanks on and some fairings and I've got a classy rig to pull the fiver(with space for a bike or cart behind the cab...

Anyhow-I don't see much reason for this on a pickup other than spinning off huge chunks of cash...

To clarify, it would be the super single I am thinking of. Never seen them on a PU. Just throwing the concept out.

A super single would put almost as much tread on the road as a DRW.

You can get them for lifted trucks, lowered trucks, or stock-height trucks.

agree with pronstar. He's talking the super singles route here. In other words, replacing the duals on a pickup with a super single tire.

Me, I like the duals better, but such a new idea (super singles) guess I have never bothered to think of advantages or disadvantages of it.
