Some have 18000 lb or larger fivers and need a dually. Some have large egos and need a dually. Others think a dually has something to offer over a SRW truck for a small trailer and therefore buy a dually. Its surprising there is anyone left for a SRW.
Nothing to do with ego here; I've pulled with both and there is a noticeable difference in stability with the dually.
Plus, here in BC it is illegal to be over the GVWR of your vehicle; I don't think I could stay under the GVWR of a SRW truck with all of the stuff we carry, especially when going for 3 weeks. As others in the thread have said, I like not having to worry about taking extra wood, water, work out weights, etc. :B
I agree with Blofgren, I think the one with the ego is those that think it fine to try to carry a 15,000#+ 5er with a SRW. Even with the current higher GVWR on SRW there is a point only having one tire on each side of an axle with 7,000#+ on it is just not wise. Just because a SRW has a 4,500# payload doesn’t mean you can carry passengers and stuff and a 4,000# pin.
And yet you towed for years with a SRW 2nd Gen way over it's rating, just like I did. Note, without an issue. My 2015 SRW is 3 times the truck that my 2001.5 was, is more ways than one.
