So-called "cold air filters" are most of the time hot air setups, that suck the air from engine bay, instead of factory inlet at front grille.
How did such modification passed smog test?
I wonder what else will come down the road?
If you will heave to buy new filter, go for OEM severe duty one. Those can absorb several lb of dust and still work fine.
Diesels, unlike a gas engine consume a fixed volume of air (dependent on RPM) and engine speed is determined by the amount of fuel injected. A gas motor's air volume varies with throttle opening so... The more air a diesel can get, the better off it is. OEM filters and filter boxes are very restrictive as far as efficient air movement because there is an intake noise factor involved. Cold air intakes provide that air without restriction or noise abatement. Don't really matter if the cold air intake is sucking in engine compartment heated air or not, the ATA unit is cooling the charge air to ambient anyway. That is what it's for. In my case, I installed a K&N cold air intake and fabbed a duct to pull ambient air from the grill area just because.
